Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa to hunt in South Africa as an American citizen?
Yes, foreign citizens need a visa to enter South Africa. A tourist visa should suffice for hunting purposes, but it is advisable to check with the South African embassy or consulate for specific requirements.
Can we bring our wives and children, and what can they do?
Spouses and children are warmly invited to join our Safari adventures. They can partake in the hunting experience or opt for a day tour arranged by us. With an array of captivating destinations and activities available, there is something for everyone. At Big Bore Safaris, we craft personalized packages and itineraries tailored to your family’s interests and requirements.
Clients travelling with Minors

Ensure you carry an “unabridged” birth certificate containing parental details if traveling with a child under 18. If only one parent accompanies the child, you will require written consent in the form of an affidavit from the absent parent listed on the birth certificate. This authorizes the child’s entry or departure from South Africa. Alternatively, a court order granting full parental responsibilities, a death certificate of the deceased parent, or legal guardianship documents suffice.

If you are not a parent, you will need the birth certificate and an affidavit from the parents or legal guardian permitting the child’s travel with you. Copies of the parents’ IDs or passports and their contact information are also necessary.

Can I bring my own firearm hunt in South Africa?

To bring firearms into South Africa, you must secure a temporary import permit beforehand. For further details on obtaining this permit, please reach out to us via email at info@bigboresafaris.co.za.

Suitable firearms are available for rent should you not have your own firearm or prefer not to bring your own to South Africa.

Is medical care easily accessible from the hunting areas?

Yes, South Africa has several very good doctors and hospitals. Each of our hunting areas has a hospital that is easily accessible.

How much should I tip the Professional Hunter?

Our guideline will be to work on 10% of the total hunt cost towards tipping of all staff members. Our clients generally tip based on how well the relevant individual worked and how successful the safari was.

What should I pack?

In South Africa, you can expect the temperatures vary from 5-30° Celsius (41-86° Fahrenheit). The cooler temperatures are experienced in the early morning and late evenings.

It is advisable to pack a warm jacket which can be taken off and left in the hunting vehicle.

  • Hunting appropriate long pants or trousers
  • Hunting cap
  • Hunting boots
  • Thick and warm socks
  • Binoculars
  • Hunting rifle

Can I export trophies hunted in South Africa?

Yes, we can assist in having your trophy sent to the taxidermist. Once completed, you can export the trophies legally hunted in South Africa, but you must comply with South African and U.S. customs regulations regarding the importation of wildlife products. This may include obtaining permits and following specific procedures for taxidermy and meat processing.
